Arbitrary warped document image restoration based on segmentation and Thin-Plate Splines

Abstract: Warping is a common appearance in camera captured document images. It is the primary factor that makes such kind of document images hard to be recognized. Therefore it is necessary to restore warped document image before recognition. In this paper, a novel restore method is presented. The method takes a rough line segmentation and character segmentation firstly in order to estimate the warping direction. Then several pairs of key points mapping between the original image and the restored image are determined a… Show more

“…The majority of these rectification techniques [12]- [22] are based on the detection of distorted text lines at the original document image which is a well-known hard task. Some of these techniques propose a method to straighten distorted text lines by fitting a model to each text line.…”

“…The main disadvantage of this method is that it requires complex computation and, therefore, is time-consuming, while the assumption that a single cylinder fits to a deformed page is not generic. Finally, Y. Zhang et al [22] take a rough text line and character segmentation to estimate the warping direction. Then, a Thin-Plate Splines (TPS) interpolation is used to restore the image.…”

“…This method is sensitive to large and various distortions. Y. Zhang et al [4] took a rough text line and character segmentation to estimate the warping direction. In this method text line and character segmentation using projections at the original wraped document can cause many segmentation errors.…”

“…Gatos and Pratikakis [5] achieved binary image dewarping based on word rotation and translation according to upper and lower word baselines. Moreover, [6] [7] and [8] are using the similar approaches for warped document restoring. The last is the 3D acquisition method.…”
