“…This observation can be summarized as one of the main findings of the seminal study of the unemployed in Marienthal (Austria) in the 1930s (Jahoda et al, 1971). Since then, many more studies have highlighted the different detrimental effects unemployment has on people's state of mind and mental health (Drydakis, 2015; Eggs et al, 2014; Jackson et al, 1983; Murphy & Athanasou, 1999; Paul et al, 2016, 2019; Paul & Zechmann, 2019), as well as the effect of mental health on unemployment (Burnett‐Zeigler et al, 2013; Frijters et al, 2014; Mojtabai et al, 2015; Mousteri et al, 2019; Thomas et al, 2005).
