“…As our aim is to demonstrate some of the links between language ideologies, norms of (double) monolingualism and political histories, we find it relevant to consider the relations between the language classroom and the political context. A few studies have covered a similar terrain: according to Uhlmann (, ), in Israel, Arabic is taught in a way similar to ancient (and no longer spoken) languages (Latin, Greek), and the teachers, mainly Hebrew speaking Jews, lack oral skills. The many native speakers of Arabic are disregarded as suitable teachers, among other reasons because the Israeli military dominates (parts of the) Arabic instruction and sees Arabs as a default security risk.…”
