Arabidopsis florigen FT binds to diurnally oscillating phospholipids that accelerate flowering

Abstract: Arabidopsis FT protein is a component of florigen, which transmits photoperiodic flowering signals from leaf companion cells to the shoot apex. Here, we show that FT specifically binds phosphatidylcholine (PC) in vitro. A transgenic approach to increase PC levels in vivo in the shoot meristem accelerates flowering whereas reduced PC levels delay flowering, demonstrating that PC levels are correlated with flowering time. The early flowering is related to FT activity, because expression of FT-effector genes is i… Show more

“…Polar lipid profiling showed that, similar to findings on the previously characterized tgd1-1 mutant (Xu et al, 2005), tgd5 mutants displayed substantially reduced levels of galactolipids with concomitant increases in PC ( Figure 3B). It has recently been shown that increased PC promotes flowering via interaction with the Arabidopsis florigen FT (Nakamura et al, 2014). Therefore, it is possible that the early flowering phenotype of tgd mutants is due to increases in PC levels.…”

“…The nmt1 nmt3 mutant is a powerful tool for analyzing the physiological functions of including those that appear to preferentially bind to FT (Nakamura et al, 2014 navigation towards the ovule and egg cell (Higashiyama and Takeuchi, 2015). This supports 665 a need for future investigation under a range of conditions as a temperature-conditional male 666 sterility has been reported in an NMT1 silencing line (Mou et al, 2002) and should include 667 examining the possibility that, in the homozygous nmt1 nmt3 double mutant, female 668 sporophytic defects may influence the male gametophyte, such as observed in some female 669 gametophytic mutants (Huck et al, 2003), especially given the strong and specific expression 670 of NMT3 in the synergid area during late ovule development (Fig.…”

“…Future research will focus on verifying how these alterations can preserve the lipid composition in membranes while ensuring their effective recycling in Pi-starved conditions. Ultimately, this will help to identify key elements of membrane lipid control, an important topic considering the emerging regulatory role of PtdCho in the control of plant responses to the environment (Nakamura et al, 2014). …”
