Arabia's Last Forests Under Threat Ii: Remaining Fragments of Unique Valley Forest in Southwest Arabia

Abstract: Over the last three decades, vegetation surveys in southwest Arabia have documented the existence of a small number of valley forest patches. A well-known area is in Wadi Rijaf, Jabal Bura, a protected area which has recently been surveyed by the current authors. The other valley forest sites in southwest Arabia have not been surveyed for over 15 years. This paper presents a descriptive study of five of these important valley forest localities. To provide an assessment of conservation value, field studies reco… Show more

“…Five of these are newly recorded localities in southwest Arabia (Wadi Tawlaq, Wadi Al-Basal, Wadi Lejib, Lejib Gorge and Wadi Shi'ib/Wadi Tharb). Hall et al (2009) also note the absence of M. laurifolia from sites in the western escarpment mountains where it had previously been recorded by Wood (1997). Their surveys of valley forest habitat along the escarpment did not record any individuals of M. laurifolia on the western slopes of Jabal Raymah, in Wadi Hillah, Jabal Melhan at the location above Hillah, Jabal Bura (Wadi Rakhaman).…”

“…Hotspots with heterogeneous habitats and high species diversity are often targeted areas for the conservation. As a rule, species richness or biodiversity normally increases with altitudes where moisture level is high (Hall et al, 2009(Hall et al, , 2010. It means that the high altitudes in arid areas are most likely the hotspots with heterogeneous habitats and high species diversity.…”
