“…Becerra and Amaral (93) hypothesized that identifi cation and separation of the structural determinants within the erythropoietin molecule could elucidate additional ways to minimize side effects associated with local administration of erythropoietin to the eye, an approach that offers advantages over systemic administration. Recently, the role of AH erythropoietin in POAG has been investigated, and the studies have concluded that erythropoietin is a possible biomarker for the disease (61,94,95) .…”

“…reported a statistically significant decrease in retinal EPO levels 48 and 72 h after acute ischemia-reperfusion damage in their experimental glaucoma-ischemia model in rats. Cumurcu et al [18]. showed that the aqueous humor EPO concentration in eyes with POAG (10.91 ± 4.32 mU/ml) was significantly higher than that in eyes with cataract (8.24 ± 1.77 mU/ml), and they suggested that EPO could play a role in glaucoma pathogenesis.…”

“…In the field of glaucoma there are also some studies which can be seen as proof of its neuroprotective effect [12,[22][23][24], although they were confined to animal models [22][23][24]. Only one study has investigated EPO levels in aqueous humor of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients, and showed higher levels in the POAG group [18].…”

“…EPO is expressed at a number of sites including the kidney, liver, neural tissue, female genital tract, placenta, testis and the adult mammalian retina, which also expresses EPO receptors [4] . Furthermore, it is present in aqueous humor and vitreous, and its concentration in the eye is increased in retinopathy of prematurity [5] , branch retinal vein occlusion [6] , proliferative diabetic retinopathy [6,7] , diabetic macular edema [8,9] and primary open-angle glaucoma) [10] . Recently, an experimental study showed that the levels of EPO in detached retina increase with the duration of RD [11] , but we have not come across a study showing the vitreous EPO levels of RRD and PVR patients.…”
