Aqueous extract of Saussurea lappa root ameliorate oxidative myocardial injury induced by isoproterenol in rats

Abstract: Saussurea lappa Clarke (Compositae), is commonly known as Kushta. In Ayurvedha, it is mentioned that the aqueous extract of the root S. lappa was used for treatment of angina pectoris. The present study was designed to investigate the cardioprotective effect of aqueous extract of root of S. lappa against isoproterenol induced myocardial injury. Myocardial injury in rat was induced by the administration of isoproterenol at a dose of 85 mg/kg, i.p., The rats were pretreated with the aqueous extract of S. lappa (… Show more

“…In addition, 5-hydroxy- l -tryptophan is also the precursor to biosynthesis of 5-HT. Saussureamine C, extracted from Saussurea lappa Clarke, which has anti-ulcer principles [40], anti-oxidant activity [41], antihepatotoxic activity [42], and the function of ameliorate oxidative myocardial injury [43]. 3-(2-Carboxyphenyl)-4(3 H )-quinazolinone is extracted from Isatis indigotica [44], which shows antiviral activity [45,46], antipyretic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-endotoxin activity, anticancer [47], and inhibitory effects on nitric oxide production [48].…”

“…), respectively. The top compound, saussureamine C, is defined as an antiulcer compound [ 55 ] and the herb Saussurea lappa Clarke can prevent breast cancer cell migration [ 56 ] and treat heart disease [ 57 , 58 ], has antihepatotoxic activity [ 59 ], and inhibits the killing function of cytotoxic T lymphocytes [ 60 ]. The second ranked herb, Mucuna pruriens , can reduce oxidation and prevent Parkinson's disease [ 61 , 62 ].…”

“…The top ranking compound, Saussureamine C is know for anti-ulcer treatment [56] and the herb Saussurea lappa Clarke can inhibit breast cancer migration [57], treat cardiovascular disease [58, 59], be used against hepatotoxic activity [60], and inhibit cytotoxic T lymphocytes [61]. The second ranked herb, Mucuna pruriens , can prevent Parkinson's disease based on antioxidation [62, 63].…”
