Aqueous cytokine and growth factor levels indicate response to ranibizumab for diabetic macular oedema

Abstract: Response to ranibizumab treatment for DME appears to be associated with aqueous concentrations of VEGFR1 family and certain inflammatory cytokines, but not with clinical parameters.

“…The selection of cytokines for detection was based on previous studies. [16][17][18][19] The following cytokines were analysed: platelet-derived growth factor bb (PDGFF-bb), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-9, IL-10, IL-12 (p70), IL-13, IL-15 and IL-17, eotaxin, basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF basic), granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), granulocytemacrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interferon…”

“…As previously mentioned, the efficacy of DME treatment may be related to aqueous humor concentration of some cytokines. Therefore, it is possible that the baseline levels of these molecules could be used to predict response to therapy (Shimura et al, 2017;Hillier et al, 2018;Kwon and Jee, 2018).…”

“…Although the great majority of patients improved DME after anti-VEGF treatment, some patients fail to respond to this therapy. In order to identify which patients will not respond to anti-VEGF injections and that will benefit of treatment with corticosteroids, recent studies start to evaluate the hypothesis of cytokine and growth factors as predictors of response to anti-VEGF or corticosteroids intravitreal injections (Shimura et al, 2017;Hillier et al, 2018;Kwon and Jee, 2018).…”
