Aqueous Adsorption of Heavy Metals on Metal Sulfide Nanomaterials: Synthesis and Application

Abstract: Heavy metals pollution of aqueous solutions generates considerable concerns as they adversely impact the environment and health of humans. Among the remediation technologies, adsorption with metal sulfide nanomaterials has proven to be a promising strategy due to their cost-effective, environmentally friendly, surface modulational, and amenable properties. Their excellent adsorption characteristics are attributed to the inherently exposed sulfur atoms that interact with heavy metals through various processes. … Show more

“…So far, precipitation [ 6 , 7 ], membrane process [ 8 , 9 ], ion exchange [ 10 , 11 ] and adsorption [ 12 , 13 ] techniques have been demonstrated to effectively eliminate heavy metal ions from contaminated water. Among them, adsorption is a promising and effective method for practical use due to its high efficiency, simple design and easy operation [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”

“…LAB strains are essential for improving the soil carbon pool, removing heavy metals, and detoxifying the mycotoxins [ 134 , 135 , 136 ]. Heavy metals are adsorbed by electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions [ 137 ]. Therefore, LAB might be used to produce commercial bio-filters to purify water contaminated with heavy metals and aflatoxin.…”

“…FeS also removes divalent metal ions such as Mn 2+ , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Ni 2+ and Cd 2+ . Additionally, FeS is a reductant and acts as an electron donor, making it possible to reduce and detoxify chlorinated organic compounds and inorganic oxyanions of Cr(VI), Se(VI) and As(VI) [129]. Remarkably, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-stabilized FeS offered an Hg 2+ sorption capacity of 3449 mg g −1 , and this was attributed to the dual-mode sorption mechanism where CMC-FeS adsorbs Hg 2+ through concurrent precipitation [86].…”
