Influences of zonation on water fertility and structure communities of phytoplankton and benthos in Batukaras Mangrove Forest, Pangandaran District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4978-4988. Mangrove forests are coastal areas with several advantages, including access to natural resources that other regions do not provide. Pangandaran has mangrove forest areas, namely Batukaras mangroves, located in Batukaras Village, Pangandaran, West Java, Indonesia. This study aims to identify the primary productivity and community structure of phytoplankton and benthos as one of the natural resources in the Batukaras mangrove with different zone patterns of mangrove (seaward and landward). The purposive sampling method determined the observation stations based on the vegetation density. The obtained data of Net Primary Productivity (NPP) was analyzed with the light and dark bottle (Winkler method). In addition, the data community structure of phytoplankton and benthos was analyzed using the Shannon Wienner diversity index (H'), equitability index (E), and Simpson dominance index (D). The results show that the NPP in seaward and landward are mesotrophic with values of 105.833 mgC/m3/h and 36.463 mgC/m3/h. The abundance of phytoplankton and benthos in seaward is 560 ind/m3 and 387 ind, while landward ranges from 1140 ind/m3 and 135 ind. Planktoniella sp. and Faunus ater dominated the community structure of phytoplankton and benthos seaward, while the landward location consisted of Oscillatoria sp. and Terebralia sulcata. The community structure of phytoplankton and benthos in seaward and landward has significant differences (<0.05). The seaward and landward zone shows relatively stable and non-polluted waters.

The Nolia Nuagaon (Bada Noliya and Sana Noliya Nuagaon), fisher communities rehabilitated between the newly revived Tampara Lake, Bay of Bengal, and Rushikulya Estuary. The coastal ecosystem and habitation within this sandy beach vegetation in the past are regularly affected by storm surges, coastal erosion, and floods. The fisher group relies on the sea and the estuary for their livelihood. They are politically, and socio-economically deprived. The present study envisages the societal and economic changes due to the altered ecosystem due to climate changes, Regional Sea Level Rise (RSLR), and human interventions. The basic tools involved are Hazard Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (HVCA), and Ecosystem Services Shared Value Assessment (ESSVA) using the policies piloted by the International Lake Environment Committee (ILEC) for Eco-DRR, Partners for Resilience (PfR). The Nolia Nuasahi (Bada and Sana) villages were under threat on the coastal front. The search helped to train the community to understand the pioneer issues and coercions that are surging up with time and the fishing profession, which is now replaced by migration and marginalization adding to their age-old lifestyle. The growth of tourism activities in the nearby Tampara Lake shall bring challenges to the landscape, supporting Ecosystem services and the fishing community’s regime. A joint Action Plan between the Lake and coastal ecosystem is warranted to be developed to maintain a better livelihood for the villagers after acceptance from the Gram Sabha and then included in the Gram Panchayat development plan (GPDP) to boost SDG-14.

Los ecosistemas acuáticos, vitales para la purificación del agua, la regulación climática y la preservación de la biodiversidad, se encuentran amenazados por la creciente liberación de contaminantes, entre los cuales destacan el sulfato de cobre y el sulfato de aluminio. Estos compuestos ejercen graves efectos en la salud de los organismos acuáticos y la integridad de sus nichos biológicos. Este estudio se enfoca en Gammarus pulex, un indicador altamente sensible de la contaminación en hábitats acuáticos. Para abordar esta investigación, se implementó una metodología rigurosa que abarcó desde el aislamiento y la identificación de individuos de G. pulex hasta su aclimatación y posterior exposición controlada a sulfato de cobre y aluminio. La evaluación integral de los efectos de esta exposición incluyó análisis morfométricos y poblacionales detallados. Los resultados revelaron que todas las concentraciones estudiadas de estos contaminantes provocaron reducciones significativas en el crecimiento de las poblaciones de G. pulex. Destacando, de manera preocupante, que el tratamiento con Al2(SO4)5 durante un período de exposición de 48 horas y a una concentración de 40 ppm resultó en una mortalidad del 100%. En conjunto, estos hallazgos subrayan la urgente necesidad de abordar la contaminación por sulfato de cobre y sulfato de aluminio en los ecosistemas acuáticos, reconociendo la vulnerabilidad de especies clave como G. pulex. La preservación de la salud de estas poblaciones y la conservación de la integridad de los ecosistemas acuáticos son esenciales para garantizar el funcionamiento adecuado y la sostenibilidad de estos valiosos hábitats.
