Rice fields occupy large areas in Northeastern Argentina, and in Corrientes this widespead activity has become a feature in the landscape, as it is one of the main producing provinces. The aquatic Coleoptera is part of the fauna inhabiting these artificial environments but little is known about this group in irrigated rice fields. The aims of this study were to determine the diversity and species richness of coleopterans in a typical rice field, and to characterize the community of water beetles through different abundance models. For this, samples were collected from an active rice field located in "El Sombrero" town, in Corrientes Province, between November 2011 and April 2012. An entomological net of 30 cm diameter was used, and species richness, diversity and equitability were calculated monthly; besides, the community composition was characterized by means of rankabundance models. A total of 74 species of aquatic coleopterans were identified. January and February resulted the months with the highest diversity. The aquatic Coleoptera species found in most of the sampled months were adjusted to the logarithmic rank-abundance model. The data suggests that, if it is properly managed, rice cropping in Northeastern Argentina can support a diverse aquatic coleopteran fauna. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (3): 629-638. Epub 2015 September 01.

Algae are the naturally produced food for fish in any aquatic ecosystem and an indicator of a productive pond. However, excess abundance of harmful algae can have detrimental effects on fish health. In this study, the algal communities of 30 coastal homestead fish ponds were investigated to identify the diversity, assemblage and controlling environmental variables of harmful algae from a tropical coastal area. The findings showed that 81 of the 89 genera of identified algae were harmful, with the majority of them being in the classes of Cyanophyceae (50.81%), Chlorophyceae (23.75%), Bacillariophyceae (9.5%), and Euglenophyceae (8.47%). Microcystis spp. alone contributed 28.24% to the total abundance of harmful algae. Significant differences (p < 0.05) in algal abundance were found among the ponds with the highest abundance (470 ± 141.74 × 103 cells L−1) at pond (S25) near agricultural fields and the lowest abundance (109.33 ± 46.91 × 103 cells L−1) at pond (S14) which was lacking sufficient sunlight and nutrients. Diversity indices, e.g., dominance (D), evenness (J′), richness (d) and Shannon diversity index (H′) ranged from 0.17 to 0.44, 0.23 to 0.6, 0.35 to 2.23 and 0.7 to 1.79, respectively, indicating a moderate range of diversity and community stability. Community composition analysis showed the assemblage was dominated by Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae, whereas, multivariate cluster analyses (CA) identified 11 major clusters. To identify the factors controlling their distribution or community assemblages, eight environmental variables (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity, transparency, nitrates, phosphates and sulphate) were measured. ANOVA analysis showed that the variables significantly differed (p < 0.05) among the ponds, and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) demonstrated that DO, nitrates, phosphates, sulphates, salinity and transparency have the most impact on the abundance of algal genera. In addition, analyses with Pearson’s correlation coefficient showed that the abundance of total algae, diversity and community were mainly governed by phosphates and sulphates. These results can be used to identify and control these toxic algal groups in the local aquaculture sector.

Because of the prevalence of algae in rice paddy fields, they will be exposed to Bacillus thurigiensis (Bt) proteins released from Bt protein-expressing genetically engineered rice. To assess the effects of leachates extracted from Cry1Ca-expressing transgenic rice (T1C-19) straw on the microalga Chlorella pyrenoidosa, the authors added purified Cry1Ca (10 µg/L, 100 µg/L, and 1000 µg/L) and 5 concentrations of diluted extracts (5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80%) from T1C-19 and the nontransformed control strain Minghui 63 (MH63) to the medium of C. pyrenoidosa. The authors found that the growth curves of C. pyrenoidosa treated with purified Cry1Ca overlapped with the medium control; that the order of C. pyrenoidosa growth rates for the T1C-19 leachate concentrations was 5% > 10% > 20% > control > 40% > 80%, and for the MH63 concentrations the order was 5% > 10% > control > 20% > 40% > 80%, but there were no statistical differences between the 20% T1C-19 or 20% MH63 leachate treatment and the medium control on day 8; and that after 7 d of culture, Cry1Ca could be detected in C. pyrenoidosa treated with different concentrations of T1C-19 leachate. The results demonstrated that Cry1Ca protein released from T1C-19 rice can be absorbed into C. pyrenoidosa but that purified Cry1Ca and leachates from T1C-19 rice have no obvious adverse effects on the growth of C. pyrenoidosa.
