Aquagenic syringeal acrokeratoderma

Abstract: Aquagenic syringeal acrokeratoderma is a rare, transient, and usually bilaterally symmetric, palmoplantar keratoderma. Patients complain of tingling and pain in the hands starting a few minutes after exposure to water and lasting for 20-30 minutes after removal. Clinically, there is marked wrinkling with edematous white papules on the palms or, less often, the soles. We present the case of a 21-year-old woman who used spironolactone for polycystic ovary syndrome and had similar clinical features 2 weeks later,… Show more

“…13,93,94 The hypothesized effect of sodium retention in epidermal keratinocytes is similar to the understood effect of COX-2 on renal tubular cells. 69 This effect is further supported by the reported link of spironolactone therapy to ASA. Uyar et al reported a case of ASA that developed after termination of spironolactone therapy.…”

“…Several diseases have also been reported to be associated with the development of ASA, including cystic fibrosis, marasmus, nephrotic syndrome, and atopy. 1,7,14,16,17,25,26,28,42,46,48,49,55,[60][61][62]65,68,69,95 Interestingly, tobramycin (employed therapeutically for a patient with cystic fibrosis), may be linked to the development of ASA. Notwithstanding, some of the drug-induced ASA reports should be viewed lightly; several of the reported cases are for drugs used to treat conditions theoretically linked to ASA such as atopy and cystic fibrosis.…”

“…In addition, aquagenic wrinkling has been shown in the use of selective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors and aspirin, and the patients with cystic fibrosis. [3][4][5][6] G€ und€ uz et al 7 reported a patient with ASA due to the use of salazopyrin and indomethacin. Recently, Glatz et al 8 also showed a 19-year-old patient with ASA exhibiting linear relationship between the use and cessation of paracetamol, ascorbic acid and clarithromycin.…”
