Approximating actual flows in physical infrastructure networks: the case of the Yangtze River Delta high-speed railway network

Abstract: Abstract. Previous empirical research on urban networks has used data on infrastructure networks to guesstimate actual inter-city flows. However, with the exception of recent research on airline networks in the context of the world city literature, relatively limited attention has been paid to the degree to which the outline of these infrastructure networks reflects the actual flows they undergird. This study presents a method to improve our estimation of urban interaction in and through infrastructure network… Show more

“…Due to the difficulty of obtaining relational data between cities, scholars are committed to discovering relational data to represent the linkages between cities for empirical research [11]. Airline passenger data [16], railway networks [17], bus networks [18], telecommunication flows [19], Bluetooth data [20], knowledge collaboration networks [21,22], and enterprise linkages [23,24] have all become important means of providing new perspectives for research on urban networks at home and abroad. However, there are many limitations to these studies.…”

“…e measurement method of monitoring telecommunication flows and knowledge collaboration networks encounters difficulty in distinguishing the starting point from the ending point between cities [17]. is method focuses more on judging the hierarchical status of the city in the network structure [21].…”

“…Previous research was usually based on HSR frequency, because the actual passenger flow data are difficult to obtain [7]. Zhang et al [8] proposed an inter-city HSR passenger flow simulated model; therefore, in order to serve our research, we will explore how to transform the passenger flow simulation model based on inter-city to the situation based on inter-station, which is one of the purposes of this research. Moreover, another purpose of this research is to pay attention to the spatial structure evolution characteristics of the HSR network, including regional and local scales, so that the structural analysis of the HSR network will go deep into the city and compare the development differences of the HSR network structure in different cities.…”

“…This is justified by research that showed that the remaining tickets (unsold tickets) and dwell time (the time spent by a train) for HSR are related to actual passenger flow [9,10], meaning that HSR passenger flow can be inferred from dwell time. In our study, we use simulated HSR passenger flow based on dwell time [8] as a measure of the interaction between nodes, which allows us to construct a more precise HSR network.…”

“…In many studies, traffic flow is usually replaced by actual shift information. Early studies based on traffic flow focused more on the perspective of air passenger flow [6] followed by research studies based on rail passenger flow and air passenger flow [7][8][9]. Data on passenger air and railway flow are easy to obtain and have great advantages in large-scale network research, but there are considerable limitations on urban connection research in smaller areas.…”
