Approximate convex decomposition for 3D meshes with collision-aware concavity and tree search

Abstract: Approximate convex decomposition aims to decompose a 3D shape into a set of almost convex components, whose convex hulls can then be used to represent the input shape. It thus enables efficient geometry processing algorithms specifically designed for convex shapes and has been widely used in game engines, physics simulations, and animation. While prior works can capture the global structure of input shapes, they may fail to preserve fine-grained details (e.g., filling a toaster's slots), which are critical for… Show more

“…Shape Decomposition. The generalized enveloping primitives in our method share similarities with several variants proposed in the field of shape decomposition [Simari and Singh 2005;Wei et al 2022;Zhou et al 2015]. Examples of such methods include the use of generalized cylinders [Zhou et al 2015] and ellipsoidal surface regions [Simari and Singh 2005], both involving the use of predefined primitives.…”

“…The first stage focuses on building task essentials, including creating assets, (e.g., convex decomposition (Wei et al, 2022), texture baking), configuring robots, generating initial states, and defining success metrics. The second stage aims at prototyping shaped reward functions.…”

“…When the robot enters into the structure from the holes, the distance v-calculation fails. To solve this problem, we need to calculate convex hull decomposition which fills the interior space of the structure [ 21 ]. However, the computations for the convex hull decomposition take a long time [ 22 ].…”
