Appropriating Invention Through Concept Maps in Writing for Multimedia and the Web

Abstract: As an alternative approach to web preproduction, I propose the use of concept maps for invention of website projects in business and professional writing courses. This mapping device approximates our students' initial site plans since rough ideas are formed based on a substantial exploratory technique. Incorporated in various disciplines, the construction of concept maps leads to better flowcharts and more structured wireframes for web development.

“…It is a deliberate and structured way of representing the relationship between disciplinary concepts and ideas. Concept maps, in particular are recognized as constructivist tools that facilitate active, reflective and meaningful learning (Bacabac, 2015;Davies 2011,Novak,2010, 1998Hay, et al, 2008;Francis, 2006).This is useful for academic assessment purposes, especially, when the process uses the six levels of Bloom's Taxonomy (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation) to guide learners' understanding of concepts and relationships between concepts when diagraming the Concept Map (Krathwohl, 2002;Anderson &Krathwohl, 2001).…”

“…For surveys with advanced designs, a preliminary assignment could include a logic “tree” indicating question flow and, in particular, skip-logic sequences. These can be assimilated to other visual preproduction tools such as mind maps, concept maps, storyboards, flowcharts, or even website design tools (Bacabac, 2015).…”
