Approaching Industrial Symbiosis Through Agent-Based Modeling and System Dynamics

Abstract: Sustainable industrial systems are complex, since they exhibit both detail and dynamic complexity. Only an integrated approach is able to provide a realistic view of such complex systems providing a useful insight into their behavior. In this paper, a hybrid approach based on Agent Based Modeling (ABM) and System Dynamics (SD) is presented in order to improve modeling insight of an industrial symbiosis (IS) context. Hybrid approaches have gained prominence overpassing limitations of traditional methodologies a… Show more

“…Furthermore, a hybrid system of ABM and SD has been proposed in order to address the unique characteristics of the IS problem [9,13]. As the ABM method is more recent, the SD method is more mature.…”

“…The symbiotic relationship between two or more industries aims to improve the physical exchanges of materials, energy, water, and by-products [7]. The key is to close the materials cycles, using waste from one facility as an alternative input to another facility [8,9].…”

“…It is a deductive or top-down approach for studying the information-feedback characteristics of industrial activity (Sterman 2001). The SD model is applicable in analysing the holistic performance of an EIP and has a low request for data quantity and accuracy (Demartini et al 2018). Nevertheless, it could not reflect the heterogeneity of entities and are unable to assess the evolution of IS between individuals (Romero and Ruiz 2014).…”

“…This is particularly useful to carry out analysis ex-ante, even before a given system has been created, aimed at supporting the design phase. Since ISNs have been recognized as complex adaptive systems (Côté and Hall, 1995;Liwarska-Bizukojc et al, 2009), the ABM approach is considered appropriate to analyze the dynamics of symbiotic cooperation among different companies (e.g., Batten, 2009;Cao et al, 2009;Demartini et al, 2018).…”
