Approaches on the acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene functionalization through maleic anhydride and dicumyl peroxide

Abstract: Acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) functionalization is industrially important since it can wide the ABS application range. However, grafting of functional groups must be effective. This work aimed evaluating the effectiveness of ABS functionalization in an internal mixer, using maleic anhydride (MA) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as initiator, at 2.5% and 5.0%; and 0.3% and 0.5% contents respectively. Torque rheometry, melt flow rate (MFR), titration, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact ang… Show more

“…It seems REX provides more polarity to the surface as a consequence of the reaction products obtained after the decomposition of DCP in the extruder and the subsequent free radical formation which could lead to branching, crosslinking, among others. [ 77 ] These results agree with those reported by Ararat et al [ 78 ] in which the effect of DCP on surface wetting properties of a blend of LDPE and a maleinized hyperbranched polyester is studied. They concluded that the water‐contact angle is lower for increasing the DCP content in the reactive compatibilization process.…”

“…Acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) terpolymer has high impact strength, good processability, and relatively low cost 24 . ABS incorporation can improve the impact strength of PP since its elastomeric phase is based on polybutadiene (PB), which has an enormous potential to increase the toughness of the final mixture.…”

“…The chemical modification of ABS AE8000 ® with maleic anhydride was carried out in our laboratory using an internal mixer. The detailed procedure for ABS grafting, the grafting degree, and the rheological, thermal, and spectroscopic properties can be found in the literature [ 35 ].…”
