Approach to improve the productivity of bioactive compounds of the cyanobacteriumAnabaena oryzae using factorial design

Abstract: Cyanobacteria are one of the richest sources of biomedical relevant compounds with extensive therapeutic pharmaceutical applications and are also known as producer of intracellular and extracellular metabolites with diverse biological activities. The genus Anabaena sp. is known to produce antimicrobial compounds, like phycocyanin and others. The goal of this study was to optimize the production of these bioactive compounds. The Plackett-Burman experimental design was used to screen and evaluate the important m… Show more

“…Algal extracts were prepared according to Hamouda et al (2017) . Different amounts of dried algal biomass (50, 100, 150 and 200 mg) were boiled in 10 mL distilled water for 30 min, cooled and centrifuged at 1,000 rpm for 5 min, after that the supernatants were taken as the algae extracts.…”

“…The absorbance of the samples was measured at 515 nm. The free radical scavenging activity was calculated using the following equation: DPPH scavenging activity (%) (antioxidant activity, %) = ((A0-A1)/A0)*100 where: A0 is the absorbance of the control reaction and A1 is the absorbance of reaction mixture (Hamouda et al, 2017).…”

“…The pure cultures of cyanobacteria were maintained in the culture room at 27 ± 2 • C. For regular experiments, cultures were grown in blue-green (BG-11) medium under 14-h:10-h light and dark photo period, the light intensity of 2400 Lux and at pH=7.0 (Hamouda et al, 2017;Mahfooz et al, 2017).…”
