Approach to Assessment of New Swabs and Viral Transport Media for SARS-CoV-2 Testing

Abstract: In light of the present pandemic of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the unprecedented high demand for SARS-CoV-2 testing worldwide, there are shortages of established specimen collection devices for respiratory viral testing for diagnostic microbiology laboratories. This creates a necessity to validate unverified collection devices from manufacturers that may not be a registered supplier for medical devices. As clinical laboratories do not routinely perform quality control of established collecti… Show more

“…Discomfort caused by nasopharyngeal sampling is an important but often overlooked aspect to evaluate, as recently pointed out by Locher et al ( 16 ). In our study, most patients found nasopharyngeal testing at least mildly unpleasant regardless of the swab type.…”

“…Its own socio-economic factors have a certain impact on it, which is the structural reason [ 73 ]. The study found that the impact of individual gender, age, education background, income, and other factors on the conservation-oriented environment, to some extent, proved the individual’s structural cause theory or structural constraint theory [ 74 ]. At the same time, in the specific behavior of environmental protection, the individual’s environmental protection behavior also shows the specific environmental behavior related to the individual’s corresponding cognition, knowledge, and attitude.…”

“…The swabs are immediately inoculated into sterile tubes filled with 2–3 ml of viral transport medium and protected from the degradation of viral nucleic acid by either keeping them at 2–8°C or −70°C for up to 72 h, based on the timing of testing. [ 10,11 ] PCR, which is frequently used in molecular biology to rapidly copy large quantities of DNA fragments, is the standard method of COVID‐19 testing. [ 12 ] ssRNA genomes derived from COVID‐19 are considerably large.…”
