Approach and Treatment of Giant Luminal Unicystic Ameloblastoma

Abstract: Unicystic ameloblastoma is an odontogenic tumor that affects mainly young patients and usually involves the posterior region of the mandible. In this article, we report on the case a 12-year-old girl presenting with an 8-month history of facial swelling in her lower right quadrant. Radiographic examination revealed a unilocular radiolucent lesion extending from the body of the mandible through to the angle and ascending ramus. An incisional biopsy was performed, and a diagnosis of luminal unicystic ameloblasto… Show more

“…Whereas ameloblastomas, even its less aggressive unicystic variant, require larger surgical approaches and the potential for local recurrences must be kept in mind by surgeons and clinicians. 3,30 In conclusion, our study contributes to the molecular characterization of ameloblastomas by showing that positive cases for BRAF p.V600E are homogenous for this molecular alteration. No molecular heterogeneity was found for this mutation in different microscopic areas examined.…”

“…2 Treatment approaches vary, but surgical resection is the standard treatment for ameloblastomas; however, it frequently results in facial deformity and functional impairment. 3 According to the World Health Organization Classification of Head and Neck Tumours, ameloblastomas can be classified into ameloblastoma (formerly called solid or multicystic ameloblastoma), unicystic ameloblastoma and peripheral/extraosseous ameloblastoma. Ameloblastoma (Conventional) is the most common subtype, accounting for approximately 90% of all cases, while unicystic ameloblastoma represents 5%-22%.…”

“…Ameloblastomatous alterations should be carefully investigated in incisional biopsies of large jaw cysts, and the enucleated tissues should be properly sectioned to rule out transmural or mural extension. The most common types of unicystic ameloblastoma are luminal and intraluminal [ 15 ].…”
