Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a fundamental tool for evaluating the environmental and energy load of a production cycle. Its application to renewable energy production systems offers the possibility of identifying the environmental benefits of such processes—especially those related to the by-products of production processes (i.e., digestion or biochar). Biochar has received worldwide interest because of its potential uses in bioenergy production, due to its coproducts (bio-oil and syngas), as well as in global warming mitigation, sustainable agriculture, pollutant removal, and other uses. Biochar production and use of soil is a strategy for carbon sequestration that could contribute to the reduction of emissions, providing simultaneous benefits to soil and opportunities for bioenergy generation. However, to confirm all of biochar’s benefits, it is necessary to characterize the environmental and energy loads of the production cycle. In this work, soil carbon sequestration, nitrous oxide emissions, use of fertilizers, and use of water for irrigation have been considered in the biochar’s LCA, where the latter is used as a soil conditioner. Primary data taken from experiments and prior studies, as well as open-source available databases, were combined to evaluate the environmental impacts of energy production from biomass, as well as the biochar life cycle, including pre- and post-conversion processes. From the found results, it can be deduced that the use of gasification production of energy and biochar is an attractive strategy for mitigating the environmental impacts analyzed here—especially climate change, with a net decrease of about −8.3 × 103 kg CO2 eq. Finally, this study highlighted strategic research developments that combine the specific characteristics of biochar and soil that need to be amended.

Environmental impacts of new construction in the built environment have been determined for considerable time using life cycle assessments (LCA). However, the significance of the existing building stock is neglected when considering environmental impacts at the level of embodied energy. Today alone, most of the buildings that will remain in place in 2050 are already in existence. For achieving national and international climate protection goals, the LCA of refurbishment measures is crucial. Thus, the link between building LCAs, which are conducted based on EN 15978, and refurbishment measures is established and ultimately transferred to the neighbourhood level. This paper provides a methodology in accordance with applicable standards to make use of a large activation potential in neighbourhoods. An initial focus is on the survey of the area to be investigated. The subdivision and typologisation of the building stock based on established toolboxes within the neighbourhood as well as the description of the implemented measures are besides in the focus of the methodology. Multiple scenarios for existing buildings in the neighbourhood combined with a consistent framework enables LCA to be conducted. The connection of the spatial component by a demarcated neighbourhood and the connection with the structural dimension by buildings enables a holistic view of refurbishment measures in the urban environment. As a link between the individual building and the municipality, the neighbourhood serves as a meso level.

Visualization and Interpretation of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment—Existing Tools and Future Development

The aim of this study is the evaluation of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) visualizations, which have been gaining increasing relevance in recent years. Despite this, the final interpretation and visualization of LCSA are not yet sufficiently established. Three of the existing LCSA visualization tools, Life Cycle Sustainability Triangle (LCST), Life Cycle Sustainability Dashboard (LCSD), and Sustainability Crowns, are compared and discussed along previously established target criteria. Subsequently, a “new” visualization tool (LCSA-Wheel) is developed based on analysis results and tested within a case study. It became clear that the LCST and Sustainability Crowns are mainly used to help weigh the sustainability dimensions. Nevertheless, the Sustainability Crowns meet most of the defined target criteria and thus serve as a model for the development of a visualization approach. The LCSD maps a wealth of information but is more difficult to understand without a deeper dive into the topic. The proposed LCSA-Wheel adopts a clear structure and provides information needed to understand the visualization. Although further developments are still necessary for general applicability, there is a justified assumption, shown with the help of a case study, that the LCSA-Wheel will gain acceptance in science and practice and thus drive the use of the LCSA.
