Applying the Bioarchaeology of Care model to a severely diseased infant from the Middle Holocene, north‐eastern Brazil: A step further into research on past health‐related caregiving

Abstract: A potential context of care is suggested in a case study of an anomalous burial from a severely diseased infant of 9 months (±3 months) of age at death, which displayed significant signs of infectious and/or metabolic illnesses on the skeleton. The body also received special mortuary treatment, including associated body reduction processes and display of corporeal relics. The case study corresponds to Individual 9 from Burial 2 at Toca do Enoque, an archaeological site from north‐eastern Brazil used as a funer… Show more

“…Consequently, we consider one explanation for the state of Burial 3 to be the premeditated disturbance of the burial, which was done to remove bones and acquire relics for reuse in other burials. This idea gains credibility by the presence of redeposited isolated adult human bones, interpreted as “corporeal relics” (Walsham 2010), among the funerary offerings of one of the subadults (Individual 9) from the multiple and complex Burial 2 at the same site (Solari, da Silva, Pessis, Martin, and Guidon 2020). Although these extra bones (an adult ulna and two patellas) did not correspond to any of the individuals buried in the three burials at the site, they are evidence for the practice of bone exhumation from ancient tombs for redeposition within other tombs.…”

“…Despite earlier calls for more direct engagement with disability studies literature when looking at difference in the past, Tilley's work continues to take a more medicalized approach, adopting definitions and conceptualizations of disability as outlined by the World Health Organization (Tilley and Schrenk 2017:16). The research rigor that is encouraged by the use of the bioarchaeology of care framework is admirable and has resulted in many published case studies by researchers wishing to better understand the experiences of past people (e.g., Málaga and Makowski 2019;Solari et al 2020;Tornberg and Jacobsson 2018; and many more). For example, Tilley and Nystrom (2019) applied this model in their analysis of the mummified remains of a Nasca child from Peru (ca.…”
