Applying National Estimates of Adults With Indications for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis to Populations of Men Who Have Sex With Men and People Who Inject Drugs in Colorado: Modeling Study (Preprint)

Abstract

Abstract(450 words max; current 431) Background: Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective option for HIV prevention. To realize the full benefit of PrEP at the population level, uptake must reach those at greatest risk for HIV acquisition. National guidance published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests the number of individuals with indications for PrEP is 1.1-1.2 million based on survey data of key populations. We applied these estimates at state and county levels to determine the number of those who might benefit from PrEP in Colorado.
