Applying Data Envelopment Analysis in Measuring the Efficiency of Chinese Listed Banks in the Context of Macroprudential Framework

Abstract: China is a bank-dominated country; therefore, the sustainability of the Chinese banking industry is important for economic development. In this paper, data envelopment analysis (DEA) was combined with the Malmquist index, and we statically and dynamically analyzed the efficiency of listed banks during the period 2012–2017. The results showed that 12 of the 17 banks improved their technical efficiency. The technical efficiency of three banks remained the same, whilst that of two banks had dropped slightly by le… Show more

“…The five-year plan (2016-2020) also emphasized the efficiency enhancement of finance, the improvement of service quality, and acceleration of the banking reforms by the Chinese government. The purpose of strengthening the banking reforms was to streamline the real economy [35]. According to the industrial classification of listed companies, as of 31 December 2018, there were 29 banks listed on the Chinese A-share stock market, and many of which were newly listed in 2017 or 2018.…”

“…An evaluation of bank efficiency in Slovakia employs BCC models [23]. An analysis of bank performance in China was demonstrated by the Malmquist model [24]. In summary, banks are present and thrive in all countries, and many researchers explore their efficiency with various models.…”

“…Most of these studies, along with others, mainly applied SFM and/or data envelopment analysis (DEA) and their extensions to analyze efficiency of Chinese banks. Chen et al [26], Jiang and He [30] and Zhu et al [24] measured efficiency of Chinese banks using the DEA framework, combined DEA with support vector machines, Malmquist index, and multi-directions efficiency analysis methods, respectively. SFM has also been widely applied and extended to estimate efficiency of the Chinese banking industry, such as, Lin et al [20], Yin et al [31] and Fungáčová et al [27].…”
