Applying conversation analysis to aphasia: clinical implications and analytic issues

Abstract: S This paper explores the impact of linguistic impairments on conversational ability in aphasia using conversation analysis (CA). Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques, an analysis of the distribution of turns at talk in three aphasic participants' conversations with a relative and with the researcher is described. Using extracts from the conversations for illustration, three major factors are proposed which influence the sharing of conversational turns: (1) shared knowledge of interlo… Show more

“…One study used structural equation modeling to examine the relationships between caregivers’ psychosocial functions and their care recipients’ abilities, including language function (Perrin et al, 2008). The authors reported a profound impact of caregivers’ feelings of competence, depression, and coping skills on their care recipients’ emotional states, cognitive functions, and life participation.…”

“…Since the behavioural phenomena that make up social actions are contextually situated, these phenomena are most adequately studied by attending to the variables that act to influence them. For example, several researchers have demonstrated the importance of the collaborative dyad communicative success or failure, and to the recognition and establishment of communicative competence (Ferguson, 1996;Goodwin, 1995;Perkins, 1995). Qualitative research thus involves observing people``in their own territory'' (Damico et al, 1999b).…”

“…Also, some researchers have looked more specifically at repair mechanisms in aphasia (Milroy and Perkins 1992, Ferguson 1994a, Perkins 1995, Laakso 1997. Schienberg and Holland's (1980) study has not been replicated hitherto, and it is suggested that such replication is needed.…”
