Try and V construction is prevalent in British and American English. This construction is found in both spoken and written English, although with different frequencies. The verb in this construction only appears in in the base form. The lack of research on this verb formation leaves many aspects unexplored, one of which is the transitivity of the verb. Therefore, this study is intended to find out the number of arguments informed by this construction by matching the number of arguments to the verb try and the verb following it after the conjunction and. Two verbs were used to test this match, i.e., give and bring, which are three-place predicate verbs, and other two two-place predicate verbs, i.e., see and answer, were used to validate the finding. British National Corpus (BNC) and Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) were used to collect the data. The findings show that the number of arguments matched the verb following the conjunction and. Therefore, it can be concluded the number of arguments in try and V construction is not unique to this construction, but it is similar to the try to V, where V is the non-finite verb which selects the number of arguments. This result suggests that try and V construction needs to be included in English grammar textbooks in order that non-native speakers can use and understand this rare grammatical rule in appropriate contexts.

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Data-Driven Learning (DDL) are two constructivist and student-centered approaches to language pedagogy that are well-established in second language acquisition. Despite recent fruitful attempts to unify the two approaches for enhanced pedagogical effectiveness, current technological bottlenecks, characterized by a lack of specialized functionality and accessible interfaces for ESP learning, have limited their application in a broader range of scenarios such as blended language learning. To address these issues, the present paper proposes the design and development of a new DDL system tailored to the needs of ESP pedagogy, with functions specifically designed to foster student-centered learning and develop genre awareness at different stages of the ESP learning process. Built on a flexible plug-in architecture, the system utilizes state-of-the-art NLP tools for efficient multilayered linguistic annotation and indexing, made query-able through a user-friendly web interface that minimizes expertise required for DDL activities. We demonstrate the usefulness of the system with a case study showcasing its key functions for data-driven ESP learning, and discuss its potential use in an integrative blended learning environment.

Immersive teaching has achieved remarkable results in bilingual learning. This teaching method creates an immersive environment for learners to understand and use languages. This paper explores the influence of immersive teaching on the learning performance, interest, and satisfaction of Chinese English learners, and provides several suggestions on how to apply immersive teaching. The results show that immersive teaching improves the listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities of students. One semester of immersive teaching improved the scores of listening, reading, speaking, and writing by 6.53%, 6.85%, 5%, and 4.73%, respectively; while two semesters of immersive teaching improved them by 12.46%, 16.03%, 13.55%, and 9.92%, respectively. Thanks to immersive teaching, the students’ interest in English learning soared, and their satisfaction with English learning surpassed 50%. This research lays a theoretical basis for promoting immersive teaching, and improving students’ English learning effect.
