“…The family of efficiency-based approaches incorporates data envelopment analysis, stochastic frontier approach and importance-performance analysis. Most studies that have evaluated H/T performance using efficiency-based approaches adopted the data envelopment analysis methodology (Chiang et al , 2004; Huang et al , 2012; Neves and Lourenço, 2009; Oliveira et al , 2013). Data envelopment analysis (DEA) assumes that there are no random fluctuations from the efficient frontier – in other words, all deviations are considered inefficiencies (Chen, 2007).…”

“…Pulina et al (2010), have employed DEA -Window analysis to analyse the efficiency of hotels across all of the 20 regions in Italy. A modified two-stage model was employed by Huang, et al, (2011) to evaluate productive efficiency, occupancy, and catering service effectiveness in Taiwan's international tourist hotels. Their findings showed that 39 hotels were performing well while 25 hotels were inefficient.…”

“…Liu, Chen, Chiu, and Kuo (2013) applied DEA, three-stage DEA (3SDEA), and artificial neural network (ANN) to measure the technical efficiency of 29 semi-conductor firms in Taiwan. Huang, Chiu, Ting, and Lin (2012) used the hybrid DEA model, in which the proportionate inputs are evaluated with a radial measure, and the nonproportionate inputs are evaluated with a nonradial measure in order to evaluate the impact of marketing expense on the efficiency of Taiwan's international tourist hotels. They indicated that the inefficiency caused from excess marketing expense is the main reason for lower efficiency in many tourist hotels, especially to chainoperated hotels and hotels that cater to domestic clients.…”
