Applying a Conceptual Mini Game for Supporting Simple Mathematical Calculation Skills: Students’ Perceptions and Considerations

Abstract: Mathematics is an area of study that particularly lacks student enthusiasm. Nevertheless, with the help of educational games, any phobias concerning mathematics can be considerably decreased and mathematics can become more appealing. In this study, an educational game addressing mathematics was designed, developed and evaluated by a sample of 33 students of the fifth grade of a primary school. Each student played the educational game "Playing with Numbers" (PwN), performing additions with integers, additions w… Show more

“…The possibilities for gaining conceptual understanding through exploring and experimenting in the games clearly distinguish them from straightforward drill‐and‐practice software. Our mini‐games are similar to mathematics mini‐games used in other studies (eg, Jonker et al , ; Panagiotakopoulos, ).…”

“…The game is attractive to use, as it creates competition among the children to achieve a high score. The study's findings showed that the educational game promotes fast calculation and provides motivation to the children for learning maths [26].…”

“…As general game genres vary, no clear‐cut standard of mathematics games exists. Also, games fall into more than one genre (e.g., Kirriemuir & McFarlane, 2004; Panagiotakopoulos, 2011). Taking into account the studies listed above, this study classified six major genres of digital games currently used in mathematics education (See Table 1).…”
