Although research has shown that manure soil subsurface injection reduces nutrient input to the aquatic environment, it is less known if it also reduces antibiotic surface runoff from manure‐applied fields. Surface runoff of four dairy production antibiotics was monitored comparing (i) surface application and subsurface injection of manure and (ii) time gaps between manure application and a subsequent rain event. Liquid dairy manure spiked with pirlimycin, tylosin, chlortetracycline, and sulfamerazine was applied to 1.5‐m × 2‐m test plots at an agronomic N rate via surface application and subsurface injection. On the day of application (Day 0), and 3 and 7 d after manure application, a simulated rainfall (70 mm h−1) was conducted to collect 30 min runoff. Target antibiotics in runoff water and sediment were quantified using ultra‐performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Results demonstrated that runoff was a significant route for transporting antibiotics off manure‐applied fields, amounting to 0.45 to 2.62% of their initial input with manure. However, compared with manure surface application, subsurface injection reduced sulfamerazine, chlortetracycline, pirlimycin, and tylosin losses in runoff by at least 47, 50, 57, and 88%, respectively. Antibiotic distribution between aqueous and solid phases of runoff was largely determined by water solubility and partition capacity of antibiotics to soil particles. Masses in the aqueous phase were 99 ± 0.5, 94 ± 4, 91 ± 7, and 22 ± 15% of pirlimycin, sulfamerazine, tylosin, and chlortetracycline, respectively. Manure application 3 d or longer before a subsequent rain event reduced antibiotic runoff by 9 to 45 times. Therefore, using subsurface injection and avoiding manure application <3 d before rain would be a recommended manure land management best practice. Core Ideas Compared with surface application, subsurface injection reduced antibiotic runoff. About 3% of antibiotics was lost in 30‐min runoff from a manure surface‐applied field. About 1% of antibiotics was lost in 30‐min runoff from manure subsurface‐injected fields. Antibiotic distribution in runoff water and sediment was compound dependent. Manure application at least 3 d before rain reduced antibiotics in surface runoff.

We conducted two field experiments to investigate combined effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers on nitrogen use and recovery efficiencies of hybrid rice (Palethwe-1) during dry and wet seasons, 2015. Four levels of inorganic fertilizer (0%, 50%, 75%, and 100% NPK), based on recommended rates of 150 kg N ha , were used with cow manure, poultry manure, and vermicompost (5 t·ha −1 each) in a split-plot design with three replicates. In both seasons, with 50% NPK, the N uptake level achieved with poultry manure was similar to that obtained with 75% and 100% NPK. The greatest N use, internal, agronomic N use, and recovery efficiencies were obtained with 50% NPK + poultry manure, but were similar to those obtained from cow manure and vermicompost subplots. As the amount of applied N from organic and inorganic fertilizer increased, the N use efficiency and related parameters decreased, due to similar yields among plots with different NPK application levels. Poultry manure resulted in the highest significant correlations between applied N and N accumulation, followed by cow manure and vermicompost, in both seasons. Neither chemical fertilizer nor organic manure alone led to optimum N use and N recovery efficiencies. The combination of 50% inorganic fertilizer (75 kg N ha 1044ganic fertilizers and organic manures had the benefits not only in reducing the need for chemical fertilizers but also in improving N uptake by hybrid rice (Palethwe-1) leading to the better environment.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a possible alternative to landfilling of food waste and conventional manure management in order to reduce methane emissions. We use the method of life cycle assessment in this study, and key results show that the AD Bio‐CH4 pathway has 15.5% lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to the prior practice of composting of food waste and manure in Denver, CO. GHG emissions for Bio‐CH4 production from AD conversion of food waste and manure with avoiding of food waste landfilling and conventional management of dairy manure emits −3.5 kg CO2 equivalents/kg Bio‐CH4 assuming the electricity was generated using collected landfill gas. This emission intensity is favorably compared to that of fossil natural gas equal to 4.3 kg CO2 equivalents/kg CH4 equivalents. This method for carbon foot printing can be used to evaluate climate mitigation potential of other AD Bio‐CH4 projects. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 37: 1101–1111, 2018
