“…Recently, a few applied communication researchers attempted to provide definitions for applied research in its relationship to theory research. The substance of their definitions ranges from claiming applied research is virtually no different than theory research (Frey, 2000), is a particular posture toward the goals of research (Wood, 2000), is primarily concerned with relevant social issues (Cissna, 2000), to that it solves real‐life problems (Keyton, 2000). Working from the definitions offered by the current and past editors of the Journal of Applied Communication Research ( JACR ), we define applied communication research as systematic inquiry that seeks to clarify the relationship between theory and practice in understanding communication in context.…”

“…A distinguishing feature of applied health communication scholarship is its capacity to intervene and make a positive difference in response to “real life” problems. 1 When we were invited to participate in one healthcare network’s interprofessional task force to address the issue of difficult cases in the inpatient setting, we saw an opportunity to improve outcomes for patients, healthcare practitioners, and the organization. In brief, we came to understand difficult cases as those that i) include lengthy and/or costly hospital stays, ii) lead to poor or unanticipated outcomes, and iii) include complex communication among multiple stakeholders.…”

“…Critical autoethnographers challenge us to take personally issues of social injustice and to (re)imagine possibilities for living more inclusive and equitable lives (Madison, 2012). Thus, AE offers novel ways to meet the call of applied research to not just understand communicative worlds but also change them for the better (Cissna, 2000;Frey, 2000). Indeed, in these and other ways, AE is the "embodiment of applied communication research" (Goodall, 2004, p. 187) and works to remedy "how traditional forms of scholarly representation function to erase the contradictions of emotion and work" (Ashcraft & Trethewey, 2004, p. 179; also see Tillmann, 2009).…”
