In the field of material science functionalization of substrate surfaces (e.g. metal, graphite) with organic molecules is of increasing interest. Desirable targets are molecules with functional groups providing for two‐dimensional assembly and three‐dimensional crystal growth. We have synthesized a series of halogen‐end‐capped oligo‐phenylene‐ethynylenes (OPEs) to study the interactions at the solid/liquid interface and in crystal structures. Organohalides can be involved in a wide variety of intermolecular interactions such as C–X···H, C–X···X–C and C–X···π‐orbitals. The range of halogen‐based interactions and the diversity of intermolecular forces along different crystal axes makes the investigation of such structures particular interesting and challenging. Here we probe the interplay of halide end‐groups and the backbone of an OPE to investigate the intermolecular interactions in both solution depositions (2D) and X‐ray crystal structures (3D). The STM images and the crystal structures of each OPE reveal striking packing similarities. For each molecule, a plane in the crystal structure with an arrangement of molecules resembling its two‐dimensional packing on a flat surface was found. These results support the hypothesis of sheet‐by‐sheet crystal growth and suggest that flat surfaces would be ideal interfaces to promote crystal growth for halide‐end‐capped OPEs.

A regioregular organometallic polymer with titanacyclopentadiene unit, obtained by the reaction of a 2,7-diethynylfluorene derivative and a low-valent titanium complex, is subjected to the reaction with three kinds of electrophiles (i.e., sulfur monochloride, hydrochloric acid, and dichlorophenylphosphine) to give π-conjugated polymers possessing both fluorene and building blocks originated from the transformation of the titanacycles in the main chain. For example, a phosphole-containing polymer whose number-average molecular weight is estimated as 5000 is obtained in 50% yield. The obtained thiophene, butadiene, and phosphole-containing polymers exhibit efficient photoluminescence (PL) with emission colors of blue, green, and yellow, respectively. For example, the phosphole-containing polymer exhibits yellow PL with an emission maximum (Emax ) of 533 nm and a quantum yield (Φ) of 0.37.

Synthetische Polymere haben unser tägliches Leben stark beeinflusst und verändert. Die weltweite jährliche Produktion von Polymeren stieg im Jahr 2009 auf 230 Millionen Tonnen an. [1] Polymere lassen sich entweder durch Kettenwachstumsoder Stufenwachstumsprozesse herstellen. [2] Diese beiden Klassen kçnnen in weitere Unterklassen aufgeteilt werden; dabei wird die chemische Natur des Polymerisationsprozesses näher definiert (Abbildung 1).Kettenwachstumspolymerisationen [3] lassen sich radikalisch, koordinativ oder ionisch realisieren. Hier führen wir nun eine neue Methode zur Kettenwachstumspolymerisation ein, die über einen beispiellosen streng alternierenden radikalischen/anionischen Prozess abläuft. Die neue Methode bençtigt keine Übergangsmetalle und erçffnet den Zugang zu Oligoarenen, einer Substanzklasse, die Bedeutung in den Materialwissenschaften erlangt hat. [4,5] Da Verunreinigungen durch Übergangsmetalle die physikalischen Eigenschaften eines synthetischen Polymers verändern, müssen Materialien, die aus übergangsmetallvermittelten Prozessen hervorgehen, in der Regel rigoros gereinigt werden. Die meisten Übergangsmetalle sind zudem teuer, und die aufwändigen Reinigungsprotokolle führen zu einer weiteren Kostensteigerung.Es ist bekannt, dass eine radikalische Polymerisation über einen Kreuzungsprozess in eine anionische Polymerisation überführt werden kann (Schema 1). Solche Transformationen werden über Terminierung des radikalischen Prozesses mit einem Reagens realisiert, das eine funktionelle Gruppe einführt, die eine anionische Polymerisation initiieren kann. [6] Der umgekehrte Prozess ist ebenfalls gut etabliert. Eine alternierende radikalische/anionische In-situ-Kreuzpolymerisation ist jedoch unbekannt. Unser Ansatz basiert auf dem Wissen, dass Arenradikalanionen, welche eine anionische Abgangsgruppe X (z. B. Br, I) tragen, sehr leicht unter Bildung von Arylradikalen (ArC) X À abspalten. [7] Diese Radikale reagieren mit verschiedenen Nukleophilen (Nu À ) zu den entsprechenden Radikalanionen (Ar-NuC À ), welche über Oxidation (Elektronentransfer auf das eingesetzte Arylhalogenid) schließlich in einem Kettenprozess die Arylierungsprodukte Ar-Nu liefern. Diese etablierten Transformationen werden als S RN 1-Reaktionen [8,9] (nukleophile radikalische Substitutionen) bezeichnet, und auch Aryl-Grignard-Reagentien (Ar-MgX) kçnnen als Nukleophile in solchen Prozessen eingesetzt werden. [10] Wir vermuteten daher, dass Aryl-Grignard-Reagentien, welche eine anionische Abgangsgruppe tragen, als Monomere in neuartigen radikalischen/anionischen S RN 1-Typ-Polymerisationen zum Aufbau von Oligoarenen eingesetzt werden kçnnen. Die Reaktion eines Initiator-Radikals mit einem solchen Monomer sollte ein Radikalanion erzeugen, das unter X À -Abspaltung ein Arylradikal liefert. [11] Dieses reaktive Radikal kann nun in einer C-C-Bindungsknüpfungsreaktion an das anionische Monomer unter Bildung des entsprechenden Radikalanions addieren.
