Results of inclusive measurements of inelastic electron and positron scattering from unpolarized protons and deuterons at the HERMES experiment are presented. The structure functions F p 2 and F d 2 are determined using a parameterization of existing data for the longitudinal-to-transverse virtual-photon absorption cross-section ratio. The HERMES results provide data in the ranges 0.006 ≤ x ≤ 0.9 and 0.1 GeV 2 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 20 GeV 2 , covering the transition region between the perturbative and the non-perturbative regimes of QCD in a so-far largely unexplored kinematic region. They are in agreement with existing world data in the region of overlap. The measured cross sections are used, in combination with data from other experiments, to perform fits to the photon-nucleon cross section using the functional form of the ALLM model. The deuteron-to-proton cross-section ratio is also determined.

Structure functions, as measured in lepton-nucleon scattering, have proven to be very useful in studying the partonic dynamics within the nucleon. However, it is experimentally difficult to separately determine the longitudinal and transverse structure functions, and consequently there are substantially less data available in particular for the longitudinal structure function. Here, we present separated structure functions for hydrogen and deuterium at low four-momentum transfer squared, Q 2 < 1 GeV 2 , and compare them with parton distribution parametrization and k T factorization approaches. While differences are found, the parametrizations generally agree with the data, even at the very low-Q 2 scale of the data. The deuterium data show a smaller longitudinal structure function and a smaller ratio of longitudinal to transverse cross section, R, than the proton. Polarized Proton Structure in the Resonance Region

In view of the precise data available on inclusive polarized electron scattering off polarized proton targets in the nucleon resonance excitation region, we compare these results with the coherent sum of resonant contributions to the polarized structure function $$g_1$$ g 1 and virtual photon asymmetry $$A_1$$ A 1 . To this goal, we employ the nucleon resonance electroexcitation amplitudes determined for photon virtualities $$Q^2$$ Q 2 < 5.0 GeV$$^2$$ 2 from analyses of the CLAS data on exclusive electroproduction off protons in the resonance region. Most of the well established resonances of four star PDG status in the mass range up to 1.75 GeV are included. We find that the resonance-like structures observed in the inclusive $$g_1$$ g 1 data are related to the resonant contributions in the entire range of photon virtuality $$Q^2$$ Q 2 where the data on $$g_1$$ g 1 are available. In the range of invariant mass of the final hadron system W > 1.5 GeV, the data on the asymmetry $$A_1$$ A 1 are well reproduced even when accounting for resonant contributions only, especially for the larger values of $$Q^2$$ Q 2 and energies analysed. This observation offers an interesting hint to quark-hadron duality seen in polarized inclusive electron scattering observables.
