Applications of phasor measurement units and wide-area measurement system in Finland

Abstract: Wide-area measurement -project was started by Fingrid, the Finnish transmission system owner and operator (TSO), back in 2006. Nowadays the system deploys 12 phasor measurement units (PMU) and a phasor data concentrator (PDC) with applications. PMU measurements are also streamed from and to wide-area measurement systems in Norway and Denmark. From the very beginning, Fingrid's focus of the Wide-area measurement system (WAMS) development has been on power oscillation monitoring, and Fingrid has actively worked … Show more

“…1 shows the main transmission corridors of the Nordic Power system, along with the location of the installation of different PMU devices and the location of one of the SVCs installed in Norway [3]. Notice that the geographical distances of the Nordic transmission grid are long, and in different instances power transfers from Finland to Sweden may have to travel through the AC grid for about 2,000 km [1].…”

“…Figure 4a shows the voltage angle difference, Δθ, between Kristiansand and Nedre Røssåga during the tests, while Fig. 4b shows the active power flows, P L1 + P L2 , in the Hasle corridor 1 to Sweden. The disconnection of the transmission line occurred at t ≈ 30 seconds, while the re-connection occurred at t ≈ 60 seconds.…”

“…The purpose of deploying WAMS is to handle data collection, sharing coordinated control actions at a high granularity and over a wide area, which makes the grid more efficient and reliable [44]. While the concept of WAMS was proposed in 1980s and the first demonstration project was launched in 1995 in the US, WAMS finds its commercial deployment only over the last decade due to the trend of Smart Grid [45].…”

“…The application of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data to damp power system inter-area oscillations has been an emerging topic that attracts a great deal of attentions [1,2]. Research proposals on this subject are becoming reality [1,3,4], facilitated by investments on upgrade and expansion of the underlying Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure that carries PMU data.…”

“…Research proposals on this subject are becoming reality [1,3,4], facilitated by investments on upgrade and expansion of the underlying Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure that carries PMU data. This is because, as data communication becomes essential in the utilization of PMU data, wide-area damping control system is in fact a networked control system [5], whose functionality is highly, though not exclusively, dependent on the performance of the supporting ICT system [6][7][8].…”
