Applications of Nanozymology in the Detection and Identification of Viral, Bacterial and Fungal Pathogens

Abstract: Nanozymes are synthetic nanoparticulate materials that mimic the biological activities of enzymes by virtue of their surface chemistry. Enzymes catalyze biological reactions with a very high degree of specificity. Examples include the horseradish peroxidase, lactate, glucose, and cholesterol oxidases. For this reason, many industrial uses of enzymes outside their natural environments have been developed. Similar to enzymes, many industrial applications of nanozymes have been developed and used. Unlike the enzy… Show more

“… 150 It can be designed as a targeted delivery vehicle or simulate the catalytic generation of ROS, such as oxidases and peroxidases, which can simultaneously disrupt various essential biomolecules crucial for bacterial cell viability. 151 155 Similarly, nanoenzymes can be encapsulated with antioxidants to combat oxidative stress and treat inflammatory diseases. 156 162 Nanotoxins are NPs with membrane structures wrapping around bacterial toxins designed to reduce toxicity and increase biocompatibility.…”

“…Because infectious diseases are greatly related to the respiratory system and responsible for hospitalizations and deaths, there have been some works about the applications of nanozymes in viruses, [133][134][135] bacteria, 136,137 fungi, and others detection. 138 For example, a colorimetric assay of magnetic nanozyme-linked immunosorbent assay has been presented (Fig. 4E), in which silica-magnetic nanobeads with gold nanoparticles can be used to measure influenza A virus concentration and provide immediate clinical treatment for respiratory diseases.…”

“…Nanozymes, known as a new generation of artificial enzymes, are nanoscale materials with enzyme-like catalytic activity. [1][2][3] Compared with traditional artificial enzymes, nanozymes possess plenty of superior features. Firstly, nanozymes acquire certain nano-crystalline structure features, which can provide abundant targets to modulate their catalytic performance.…”
