Applications of microwave heat treatment process to enhance the surface properties of bronze and steel materials used in journal bearing

Abstract: Journal bearings are important conformal sliding contact machine elements widely used in industrial applications to support cylindrical shafts subjected to radial loads. Wear in journal bearings propagate due to increase in fatigue load cycles, lubricant degradation, misalignment, etc. Hence, it is important to minimize the occurrence of wear in journal bearings by improving their mechanical properties. Microwave heat treatment process is one of the recent developments emerged to improve the surface properties… Show more

“…Electric and magnetic energies are linearly transferred within materials during microwave processing via interfacing interactions between molecules. Microwave technology is widely used for surface modification in terms of coating, glazing, and cladding on various metallic substrate materials for applications such as in communication, aerospace, defense, automotive, and industrial heating [ 4 , 5 , 6 ].…”

“…Therefore, this energy can possibly be used for the selectively annealing materials with better process control than the other conventional methods. [18][19][20][21] Only a few research work was carried out on the microwave annealing technique in electroless Ni-P-TiO 2 coating. Hence, the microwave annealing technique on electroless NiP-TiO 2 coating was carried out and the obtained results were compared with the common electric furnace annealing with various temperatures.…”
