Applications of Metabolomics in Cancer Studies

Abstract: Since the start of metabolomics as a field of research, the number of studies related to cancer has grown to such an extent that cancer metabolomics now represents its own discipline. In this chapter, the applications of metabolomics in cancer studies are explored. Different approaches and analytical platforms can be employed for the analysis of samples depending on the goal of the study and the aspects of the cancer metabolome being investigated. Analyses have concerned a range of cancers including lung, colo… Show more

“…Metabolomics methodology aims to identify and estimate the relative changes in the abundance of endogenous metabolites in health and disease, thus supporting the identification of biomarkers and potential targets for the development of new therapeutics [ 35 37 ]. Given the role of the pancreas as a major metabolic organ, it is reasonable to assume that the identification, characterization and validation of novel disease stratification criteria based on metabolic profiles offers a strategic advantage for PC research [ 38 47 ].…”

“…Metabolomics was applied in this study to compare tumor tissues and adjacent healthy skin tissues to explore the disease progression of CTCL. Metabolomics analyses have concerned a range of cancers including lung, colorectal, bladder, breast, gastric, oesophageal, and thyroid, among others, for discovery of biomarkers and personal medicine . For example, the glutamate‐to‐glutamine ratio represents new biomarker that was increased in 88% of hormone receptor negative (HR−) tumors and 56% of hormone receptor positive (HR+) tumors compared to normal breast tissues .…”

“…In accordance with the holistic perspective of Chinese medicines, metabolomics opens up a unique and novel insight into efficacy evaluation and action mechanism exploration of Chinese medicines as adjuvant therapies for cancer prevention and treatment. Increasing excellent reviews have been focused on the application of metabolomics in the metabolic changes and the possible underlying mechanisms behind these alterations in the pathogenesis of different kinds of cancer [33][34][35]. Little reviews have been highlighted on the metabolism-based anticancer therapies.…”
