Applications of ESCA to polymer chemistry. IV. The composition and structure of copolymers of ethylene with tetrafluoroethylene

Abstract: Molecular core binding energies have been measured by ESCA for a series of copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene and ethylene. Detailed analysis of the results demonstrates the utility of ESCA for determination of copolymer compositions and for providing information on important structural features for these copolymers.

“…This conclusion is in good agreement with previous studies of these copolymers by infrared12 and ESCA. 13 The average product of reactivity ratios found for all four samples is 0.004 ± 0.003 and is in reasonable agreement with previous results of 0.006 ± 0.003.12 19F NMR spectra of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) obtained at temperatures up to 400 °C show no evidence for any structure other than that of homopolymer. The presence of branching at a level above 0.01 % is excluded.…”

“…Chemical shift spectra of abundant spins can be obtained by removing the homonuclear dipolar interactions with a multiple pulse sequence. 13 The rare spin case both with and without magic angle spinning has been used to study motion in solid glassy polymers at room temperature. 2 The results reported here are the first example of the use of abundant spin chemical shift spectra to examine the structure and motions of a solid polymer as a function of temperature.…”

“…2͑a͒ are identified to photoelectron signals ejected from C atoms with CF 3 , CF 2 , CF, and C-CF x type bonding from the higher bonding energy. [6][7][8][9] In this spectra the dominant species was the C-CF x bond and the intensities of CF 3 , CF 2 , CF bonding showed a lower value. These trends are different from the typical results of conventional plasma etching systems, such as reactive ion etching ͑RIE͒ and plasma type which show higher concentrations of fluorocarbon bonds ͑CF 3 , CF 2 , and CF͒.…”
