Applications of Bioinspired Reversible Dry and Wet Adhesives: A Review

Abstract: Bioinspired adhesives that emulate the unique dry and wet adhesion mechanisms of living systems have been actively explored over the past two decades. Synthetic bioinspired adhesives that have recently been developed exhibit versatile smart adhesion capabilities, including controllable adhesion strength, active adhesion control, no residue remaining on the surface, and robust and reversible adhesion to diverse dry and wet surfaces. Owing to these advantages, bioinspired adhesives have been applied to various e… Show more

“…In recent years, robots with attachment functions have been developed gradually. They have been used in complex and extreme environments that humans cannot access to perform tasks such as monitoring, transportation, and exploration in the sea [ 106 , 107 ]. Nowadays, the principle and technology of bionic attachment are known and applied, and they have been applied to advanced machinery and equipment.…”

“…3,4-dihydroxypheny-L-alanine (L-DOPA) is probably the bestcharacterized compound in the field of bioadhesion and it is prominent in the literature for its numerous novel biomimetic and adhesive-inspired applications (Hofman et al, 2018;Li et al, 2020;Kang et al, 2021). Thus far, L-DOPA has been confirmed in the glue of a few species, including bacteria (Alteromonas spp.)…”

“…The characterization and use of biological adhesives represent a promising area for the production of smart, biocompatible, and sustainable adhesives and sealants to various engineering domains (Kang et al, 2021). For example, a natural polymer based on mussels' glue components is used as surgical tissue adhesive (Lee et al, 2007;Mahdavi et al, 2008;Haller et al, 2011) while the visco-elastic properties of snail mucus provide new applications as patch for wound healing (Li et al, 2017).…”

“…Adhesive bonding of metals is a crucial technology in constructing aircraft and automobiles with reduced weight, − wiring soft electronics, , and dental applications. , In parallel to developing new-generation adhesives with various functions such as reversibility, − biocompatibility, − and sustainability, − deep understanding of adhesion phenomena at adhesive/metal interfaces is crucial for providing these properties of adhesives. Interactions between an adhesive and a metal adherend involve molecular forces originating from covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds, acid–base interactions, and van der Waals interactions .…”
