Applications and Types of Smart Materials

Abstract

Different materials have been used for various purposes for the advancement of humanity ever since the beginning of human civilization. The term “smart material” encapsulates the change taking place in the field of material science. Smart materials are the key that can be used to unlock our impossible desires, such as the ability of a mobile phone screen to repair itself, the ability of some buildings to react to weather, the ability of some medical fields to release drugs into the bloodstream at the very first stage of a disease, etc. Because of its appealing and intelligent qualities, smart materials are known by other names such as responsive and intelligent materials. Overall, it can be concluded that it demonstrates a vivacious spirit and wise behavior. Temperature, pressure, tension, an electric or magnetic field, moisture, or pH can all cause these materials to react. This chapter discusses recent reviews of smart materials based on their state of the art. The authors also explore different types of smart materials and their various ways and sectors for their applications.
