Applications and prospects of different functional hydrogels in meniscus repair

Abstract: The meniscus is a kind of fibrous cartilage structure that serves as a cushion in the knee joint to alleviate the mechanical load. It is commonly injured, but it cannot heal spontaneously. Traditional meniscectomy is not currently recommended as this treatment tends to cause osteoarthritis. Due to their good biocompatibility and versatile regulation, hydrogels are emerging biomaterials in tissue engineering. Hydrogels are excellent candidates in meniscus rehabilitation and regeneration because they are fine-tu… Show more

“…Owing to its unique buffering, hydration, binding, and load-bearing properties, proteoglycan fills most of the gaps in the tissue in the form of a hydrogel ( Padhi and Nain, 2020 ). Similar to the ECM, hydrogels maintain structural integrity through physical and chemical actions, which make them cell carriers and conducive to creating a microenvironment suitable for cell growth ( Wang and Wang, 2021 ; Jin et al, 2022 ). Hydrogels are highly crosslinked macromolecular hydrated networks.…”

“…[ 4 ] Currently, the majority of clinical treatments involve suturing, repairing, or excising the damaged area. [ 5 ] Nonetheless, meniscectomy modifies the biomechanical impacts of the knee joint and compromises the joint surface, leading to an increased risk of long‐term osteoarthritis. [ 6 ] Hence, enabling self‐repair of the damaged meniscal morphology is crucial in treating meniscal injuries.…”

“…The use of hydrogel in MTE has been covered by some recent reviews, which featured discussions on hydrogel application in meniscus repair, rehabilitation, and regeneration [44,45]. By conducting a detailed analysis of the available literature in recent decades, our review aims to discuss hydrogel design, with a focus on biomaterial properties and functions, crosslinking strategies, and therapeutic components loaded by hydrogels, including cells and other bioactive additives.…”
