Application value of D-dimer testing and Caprini risk assessment model (RAM) to predict venous thromboembolism (VTE) in Chinese non-oncological urological inpatients: a retrospective study from a tertiary hospital

Abstract: Background:The Caprini risk assessment model (RAM) and D-dimer testing have been widely used in the prediction of venous thromboembolism (VTE). However, the clinical significance of these testing options are limited in non-oncological urological inpatients because of the low specificity.

“…The results of this study showed that the level of D-dimer >1.25 mg/L was an independent risk factor. The critical value of D-dimer was much higher than previously reported (6,25). This difference may result from the high proportion of aged patients in this study.…”

“…Thirty-day mortality of the VTE patients can reach more than 10-fold of the non-VTE patients (4) and about 30% of patients with PE die within the first year after diagnosis (5). Recent studies on VTE in urological non-oncological patients demonstrate that the incidence of VTE is not as rare as previously reported (6)(7)(8)(9). Few studies have been concerned about the incidence and risk factors of VTE in patients following TURP.…”

“…41 Some investigations also attempted to incorporate D-dimer results into Caprini RAM. 16,42,43 However, the efficacy of inclusion of D-dimer remains far from resolved, probably because in these studies, the optimal cutoff value of D-dimer level was independently acquired and was simply combined to risk models.…”
