Application, validation and comparison in different geographical contexts of an integrated model for the design of ecological networks

Abstract: The issue of the fragmentation of natural habitats is increasingly at the core of the scientific debate, yet it is not taken into account in planning tools, with particular reference to the dynamism and complexity of landscapes. As it has been recognised at a European level, in order to enable different species to remain in good functional status, a network of green infrastructures is required. The concept of "ecological island" is no longer sufficient to adequately protect the fauna and the ecosystem it lives… Show more

“…The construction of ecological networks can effectively connect broken habitat patches and form spatially integrated landscapes and habitat networks that improve the quality of natural ecosystems [8][9][10][11]. Ecological network tools play a central role in landscape planning [4,12] and can serve as an approach to promoting ecological and functional integration [13]. Ecological networks can protect biological and landscape diversity and promote the sustainable development of land use patterns.…”

“…The suggested alternatives are: A1 -to establish a greenways network that can promote agro-rural development (Russo et al, 2014;Riguccio et al, 2015a); A2 -to develop a greenways network that can encourage tourism and cultural enjoyment in the area (De Montis et al, 2015;Diti et al, 2015;Taylor, 2015); A3 -to realise a network of greenways that can promote ecological activities (Fichera et al, 2015;Riguccio et al, 2016). These proposals arise from the study of the scientific literature, from specialists' opinions and from information contained in consulted cartographic, digital and documentary sources (Marcheggiani et al, 2011).…”

“…However, in general, EN/ESP studies have been widely recognized due to their contribution to regional health and sustainable development [9]. Studies on ENs in Europe focused on animal conservation [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. The common step is as follows: first, researchers located the potential habitats as ecological sources by identifying migration species' characteristics, especially how the studied species migrated, mated, and found food.…”
