Application prospective of Silicon Carbide (SiC) in railway vehicles

Abstract: Silicon Carbide (SiC) power switches are new generation semiconductor devices with really interesting properties that can be suitable exploited in railway application to reduce weight and size of the power converters, increasing at the same time their efficiency. The paper presents their properties, their current application in railway vehicles and their future developments

“…WBG power electronics can reduce the power lost in electric rail by about half (see Figure 5-5), from 5 -6% to 2 -3% of the total energy used by the train (Hamada et al 2015;Brenna et al 2014;Mitsubishi Electric Corporation 2015b, 2015a). This will reduce the energy required from the grid and increase the amount sent back via regenerative breaking.…”

“…Mitsubishi has also begun testing SiC in an auxiliary inverter, reducing size (15%) and power loss (30%) (Brenna et al 2014). Fuji, in conjunction with Central Japan Railway Company, the Japanese National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (NIAIST), Sumitomo Electric and ULVAC, Inc., has also produced a 3.3kV full SiC module and has begun testing on N700 Shinkansen in Japan (Fuji Electric Co. Ltd 2015b).…”

“…Some works have presented the influence of SiC‐based devices on railway traction systems in general, like [15], and in particular on the auxiliary power supplies [16], on the DC/DC isolated converters [17], and on the power line system [18, 19]. However, the unavailability of SiC power modules reduces the number of publications, resulting only in works with working sample devices.…”
