Application on character recognition system on road sign for visually impaired: case study approach and future

Abstract: Many visually impaired people worldwide are unable to travel safely and autonomously because they are physically unable to perceive effective visual information during their daily lives. In this research, we study how to extract the character information of the road sign and transmit it to the visually impaired effectively, so they can understand easier. Experimental method is to apply the Maximally Stable External Region and Stroke Width Transform method in Phase I so that the visually impaired person can rec… Show more

“…The blob is a collection of pixels whose intensity is different from the other nearby pixels. Although the MSER (Maximally Stable External Region) can detect the blob faster, SWT (Stroke Width Transform) algorithm can detect characters from an image with no separate learning process [104]. Shilkrot et al [105] developed FingerReader, a supporting reading system for visually impaired people to assist impaired persons in reading printed texts with a real-time response.…”

“…Arakeri et al proposed a raspberry pi with NoIR camera to captures the readable material around the visually impaired and used a speech synthesis to generate sound in regional language [19]. Fink and Humayun [20], and more researcher [21,22] presented the invention for the visually impaired. A digital camera mounted on the person's eye or head is used to take snapshots of an image on demand and provided to an image processing algorithm.…”
