“…The LOD of such a TLS system is comparable to that of other dual-beam TLS instruments, and it can be used to analyze samples with up to six different components. For determination of various inorganic species (heavy metals, inorganic anions) in the visible region, coloring reagents and ligands such as 1,10-phenanthroline (Divjak et al, 1998), pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid ( Sikovec et al, 1995( Sikovec et al, , 2001, 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (Mad zgalj et al, 2008;Sikovec et al, 1995Sikovec et al, , 2001, and 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol ( Sikovec et al, 1996) were used for derivatization. However, derivatization is sometimes difficult to perform, especially for small molecules.…”

“…These metals can be essential or toxic for the organism. Sikovec et al 19 have evaluated the applicability and limitations of dual-beam thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) detection in ion chromatography separations of different heavy metal ions (Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , Fe 2+ , and Fe 3+ ) and they have investigated the influence of experimental parameters such as excitation laser power on the TLS signal. As a result, in the case of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ TLS detection at 514.5 nm was found to be advantageous compared with UV-visible detection at 520 nm (λ max = 520 nm), in the case of Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ the detection limits of the two techniques were comparable.…”

“…Such assessments would need to be carried out either in fields or immediately after collecting samples, because Fe 2+ tends to rapidly oxidize and become Fe 3+ . There are numerous analytical techniques used for iron speciation, such as ion chromatography, [4][5][6][7][8][9] flow-based analysis, [10][11][12][13][14][15] solvent extraction and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), 16 voltammetry, [17][18][19] and fluorescence spectrophotometry. 20 However, apart from some flow-based analysis systems, these techniques are infrequently used in field work due to the instrument size and a non-portable nature.…”
