The carbonate reservoirs in the Tarim Basin are characterized by low matrix-porosity, heterogeneity and anisotropy, which make it difficult to predict and evaluate these reservoirs. The reservoir formations in Lundong area experienced a series of diagenesis and tectonic evolution stages. And secondary storage spaces such as fractures and dissolution caves were developed while nearly all the primary pores have disappeared. Based on a summary of different types of storage spaces and their responses in conventional logs, FMI and full waveform sonic logs which are sensitive to different reservoirs, the comprehensive probability index (CPI) method is applied to evaluating the reservoirs and a standard of reservoir classifi cation is established. By comparing the evaluation results with actual welllogging results, the method has proven to be practical for formation evaluation of carbonate reservoirs, especially for the fractured carbonate reservoirs. In reservoir fl uid identifi cation, the multivariate stepwise discriminant analysis (MSDA) method is introduced. Combining the CPI method and MSDA method, comprehensive formation evaluation has been performed for fractured and caved carbonate reservoirs in the Tarim Basin. Additionally, on the basis of secondary pore inversion results, another new method of formation evaluation is also proposed in the discussion part of this paper. Recently, theoretical modeling based on rock physics has emerged as a pivotal approach to studying the resistivity of complex fractured–cavernous microstructures. In this work, to study the effects of fractured–cavernous structures on carbonate reservoir resistivity, electrical conductivity models were developed based on the effective medium theory and Ohm’s Law, and theoretical simulations were performed to examine how the porosity and resistivity of the rock matrix, the formation water resistivity, and the parameters of the fractured–cavernous microstructure affect the resistivity of rocks saturated with petroleum or water. Furthermore, the modeling results revealed the specific relationships between these factors in petroleum-saturated and water-saturated rocks. For vuggy reservoirs, a significant negative correlation between throat diameter and resistivity was revealed when variations in the rock matrix and formation water resistivity were negligible. Furthermore, the pore shape—especially the extension of pores in the direction of the current—severely reduced the resistivity of petroleum-saturated rocks. For fractured reservoirs, the porosity and resistivity of the rock matrix were the primary factors affecting resistivity, with the fracture inclination angle and width also exhibiting pronounced effects on the resistivity of water-saturated rocks. The rock cementation exponent was much smaller when the matrix pores were interconnected through fractures than when they were interconnected through throats. The findings reveal that the effects of the structural parameters of fractured–cavernous carbonate reservoirs on reservoir resistivity differ between petroleum-saturated and water-saturated rocks. The conventional Archie’s equation is insufficient for evaluating fluid saturation in carbonate reservoirs. A saturation evaluation model with a variable rock cementation exponent tailored to the specific reservoir type should thus be developed.

The Permian strata in the southwest Tarim Basin contain organic reefs with good exploration prospects. Based on observations of outcrops and thin section examination of the Permian Keziliqiman Formation reef in the Sangzhu section of Pishan County, Xinjiang, northwest China, the basic characteristics of the reef are studied. This organic reef, as a point reef which grew along the platform margin, has a complete subfacies system of base, core, front, back, and cap. The lithology of the lower zone of the core is mainly sponge bafflestone, while that of the upper zone is coral framestone. The development of reefs was controlled by the rise and fall of sea level. It was when the sea level rose in southwest Tarim Basin that the Keziliqiman reef gradually came into existence. Later, with rapid decline of sea level in that area, the Sangzhu section turned into a hot and dry supratidal zone, where algae began to flourish, dolomitization intensified, reef building organisms died en masse, and eventually the reef died. Paleontological and geochemical characteristics of the Sangzhu reef indicate that the sea-level decline in southwest Tarim Basin may be related to the Early Permian glaciers. Since then, the reef began to be transformed by diagenesis. But on the whole, its effect was not significant. Furthermore, its diagenetic process had more to do with marine fluids than with nonmarine fluids, for nonmarine fluids was powerful enough to affect bioclasts but powerless to affect micritic matrix.
