Par ailleurs, lorsque l'e´nergie de chaque champs de vitesse est conserve´e, les re´sultats de la POD invariante en phase prennent aussi en compte les diffe´rences d'e´nergie entre les donne´es PIV et LES.Abstract -Evaluating Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and High-Speed Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) with Phase-Invariant Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) -This study is part of a program to understand the stochastic variations in IC engine flows; in particular, it is a comparison of measured (PIV) and computed (LES) velocity from multiple cycles of the same motored engine.Comparison procedures included traditional RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) decomposition (ensemble-averaged and RMS (Root Mean Square) velocity), phase-dependent, and phaseinvariant POD. Phase-dependent POD was performed on the PIV and LES samples separately and on the combined samples, thus creating separate or a single POD mode sets, respectively. The phaseinvariant POD was performed both on normalized snapshots and on snapshots where the original energy was conserved.Initial comparisons of the mass-specific kinetic energies of the ensemble average and RMS velocities revealed that the PIV and LES data sets differed significantly during most of the intake stroke. This discrepancy was quantified first by comparing the relevance indices calculated between ensemble average velocity fields and, second, using phase-dependent POD, which quantified cycle-to-cycle flow variations of the RANS average and turbulence. Phase-dependent POD was applied separately to the PIV and LES data sets during the intake stroke (76°ATDCE, After Top Dead Center Exhaust), where the intake-valve jet is strong and the PIV and LES data were earlier found to be significantly different. Due to its positive effect on flame propagation in the case of a well-defined breakdown, the formation of a large-scale tumble motion is an important goal in engine development. Cycle-to-cycle variations (CCV) in the tumble position and strength however lead to a fluctuating tumble breakdown in space and time and therefore to combustion variations, indicated by CCV of the peak pressure. This work aims at a detailed investigation of the large-scale tumble motion and its interaction with the piston boundary layer during the intake stroke in a state-of-the-art gasoline engine. To allow the validation of the flow near the piston surface obtained by simulation, a new measurement technique called "Flying PIV" is applied. A detailed comparison between experimental and simulation results is carried out as well as an analysis of the obtained flow field. The large-scale tumble motion is investigated based on numerical data of multiple highly resolved intake strokes obtained using scale-resolving simulations. A method to detect the tumble center position within a 3D flow field, as an extension of previously developed 2D and 3D algorithms, is presented and applied. It is then used to investigate the phase-averaged tumble structure, its characteristics in terms of angular velocity and the CCV between the individual intake strokes. Finally, an analysis is presented of the piston boundary layer and how it is influenced by the tumble motion during the final phase of the intake stroke.

The general properties and evolution of in‐cylinder flows are reviewed, from the initial generation of turbulence and large‐scale bulk structures during the induction process until the early expansion stroke period, when flow processes continue to aid with the completion of combustion. Flows typical of both spark ignition and compression ignition engine technologies are described. Our primary emphasis is on providing the practicing engineer and engine designer with a physical understanding of the storage of flow energy in large‐scale rotating structures; the mechanisms by which this energy can be extracted to enhance turbulent mixing processes; the interaction of these flow structures with the compression, fuel injection, and combustion processes; and the fluid‐dynamical origin of cycle‐to‐cycle fluctuations in the combustion process. We further examine characteristics of the turbulence, with the objective of providing engineers with a natural understanding of how turbulence scales relate to engine parameters (bore, stroke, speed, etc.) and of how turbulence is generated and dissipated throughout the engine cycle. Various methods used to characterize and separate the turbulence from large‐scale, coherent cycle‐to‐cycle fluctuations in the flow, and tools to characterize the topology of the flow, are also briefly reviewed. Lastly, we identify several areas, principally related to turbulence generation and dissipation in engines, to the elucidation of flow structures and their cycle‐to‐cycle variation, and to near‐wall flows, that are still poorly understood and that would benefit from additional investigations by the research community.
