Application of the modified similarity-based method for cutting fluid selection

Abstract: An enormous amount of heat is released at the contact surface during machining of a component/partdue to friction, rubbing action and cutting forces generated. Cutting fluids are generally applied to provide lubrication and cooling at the tool and workpiece interface. They also play a beneficial role in machining operations, and enhance job shop's productivity, tool life and quality of the finished parts/products. In addition to these, they act as an important contributor in optimizing a machining operation. H… Show more

“…For the last few years, MCDM serves as an effective tool in solving numerous decision-making challenges in wide variety of areas and several researchers have already implemented different MCDM tools for choosing the right option for example material handling equipment selection, 14,15 material selection, 16,17 cutting parameters selection, 18,19 cutting fluid selection 20 etc. related to industry.…”

“…The evaluation of performance of coolant liquid for green manufacturing by an amalgamated MCDM approach was conducted to select the optimal cutting fluid [14]. The temperature on Chip tool interface, cutting force, wear on tool and roughness on the machined surface are the criterion considered to evaluate the single global lubricant index to opt the appropriate lubricant and to rank it applying AHP and TOPSIS method for steel turning operation [15].A modified similarity based method is adopted for cutting fluid selection considering cutting tool material, operator safety, rancidity, reliability and compatibility with the tool material [16].…”

“…From the above literature it can be seen that most of the researchers adopted and applied different MCDM tools for taking effective decisions related to different industry e.g. manufacturing industry (Dey and Chakraborty, 2016;Prasad and Chakraborty, 2018), textile industry (Kundakci and Tuş , project management and evaluation (Chaghooshi et al, 2016;Rathi et al, 2016), supplier selection problems (Prasad et al, 2017;Koganti et al, 2019), transportation and logistics (Tzeng et al, 2005;Efendigil et al, 2008), energy sector (Kowalski et al, 2009;Tsoutsos et al, 2009) etc. but very few research works have been recorded where MCDM tools are applied for taking strategic decisions while purchasing some household appliances which are related to our daily life problems like choosing of an appropriate electronic gadgets e.g.…”
