Application of the local entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria Bassiana Vuill against larvae Oryctes rhinoceros L. in immature oil palm plants in Sei Siasam, Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia

Abstract: The decline in oil palm production can be caused by pest attacks. The main pest that attacks oil palm is the horn beetle. Control is usually done by using chemical pesticides. The use of chemical pesticides can cause resistance, resurgence, destruction of natural enemies, and environmental pollution. The use of chemical insecticides can be minimized by using environmentally friendly and sustainable control alternatives, namely by using the local entomopathogenic fungus B. bassiana. This study aimed to obtain t… Show more

“…Controls technique that is widely used by farmers generally uses synthetic insecticides. Pest control that prioritizes the use of synthetic insecticides is ineffective, unsustainable, and results in various negative impacts [10]. The negative impact of the use of synthetic insecticides such as resistance, pest resurgence, killing of natural enemies, increasing of residue on yield, environmental pollution, and health problems for users [10].…”

“…To control pests, farmers usually use synthetic pesticides. As a result, resistance, resurgence, death of natural enemies and of course can cause environmental pollution, because levels of synthetic pesticide residues can increase and kill organisms in the food chain [5,6,7]. Very few pesticides used after DDT have long environmental half-lives, and none of them bioaccumulate in the same way as organochlorines did.…”

“…C. gigantea has been used as an insecticide [4,5], medicinal plant [16], molluscacide, fungicide, and nematicide [17] because C. gigantea contains flavonoids, tannins, cardiac glycosides, and terpenoids [18]. Secondary metabolites of this plant can cause ovicidal effects [8,9], oviposition deterrent [21], larvicidal and repellent [22] for insects.…”
