This paper presents a wide-angle scanning phased array antenna using high gain pattern reconfigurable antenna (PRA) elements. Using PRA elements is an attractive solution for wide-angle scanning phased array antennas because the scanning range can be divided into several subspaces. To achieve the desired scanning performance, some characteristics of the PRA element such as the number of switching modes, tilt angle, and maximum half-power beamwidth (HPBW) are required. We analyzed the required characteristics of the PRA element according to the target scanning range and element spacing, and presented a PRA element design guideline for phased array antennas. In accordance with the guideline, the scanning range was set as ±70° and a high gain PRA element with three reconfigurable patterns was used to compose an 8x1 array antenna with 0.9 λ0 spacing. After analyzing whether the active element patterns meet the guideline, the array antenna was fabricated and measured to demonstrate the scanning performance. The fabricated array can scan its beam from -70° to 70° by dividing the scanning range into three subspaces. It shows that even if the array antenna has large element spacing, the desired scanning performance can be obtained using the elements designed under the guideline.

Design of a Dual-Polarization All-Metal Vivaldi Array Antenna Using a Metal 3D Printing Method for High-Power Jamming Systems

This paper proposes an all-metal Vivaldi array antenna with a wide-angle impedance matching (WAIM) layer for high-power jamming systems. To reduce fabrication complexity and time, the proposed array antenna is manufactured using a metal 3D printing method. The Vivaldi unit cell, composed of a radiating flare part and an inner cavity, is extended into an 8 × 8 array with a ±45° slant configuration. To further enhance the beam steering angle, the WAIM layer is placed on top of the proposed array antenna. The performances of the proposed array antenna, such as its active reflection coefficients (ARC), gains, and array radiation patterns, are investigated in a full anechoic chamber. At a steering angle of (0 = 45°, 0 = 25°), the measured and simulated average ARCs of the center element (Port 36) with the WAIM layer are -13.2 dB and -18.5 dB, respectively. At 4 GHz, the measured and simulated bore-sight gains of the proposed array antenna are 19 dBi and 20.6 dBi, respectively. In addition, the measured and simulated bore-sight gains for the (0 = 45°, 0 = 0°) steering angle in the zx-plane are 18 dBi and 21 dBi, respectively. In the zy-plane, bore-sight gains for the (0 = 45°, 0 = 0°) steering angle are 19.3 dBi by measurement and 19.1 dBi by simulation. These results demonstrate that the proposed array antenna is suitable for highpower jamming systems because stable bore-sight gains are observed even at wide steering angles without unwanted grating lobes.INDEX TERMS High-power jamming systems, 3D printing, all-metal Vivaldi array, unit cell array, wide angle impedance matching
